About the Editor

Jamie is an elder millennial, raised in a nerd loving, geek rich environment and fed a steady diet of Buffy, Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Xena and Tolkien. With a love of story structure and a deep appreciation for a well executed narrative, her passion for stories runs deep.

She has been writing and working with fellow authors for the last seven years, providing detailed developmental feedback to critique partners and giving alpha/beta reader feedback within writing groups. As she discovered that her strengths lay with developmental editing, she began pursuing her professional development. She has completed multiple courses, through organizations such as, the Editorial Arts Academy and the Editorial Freelancers Association.

She has a passion and enthusiasm for helping authors refine and evaluate their plot development, story structure, character arcs, tone, themes, pacing and, narrative cohesion. Most importantly, she seeks to help authors while letting their writing style and voice shine.

When she's not editing, she spends her time reading, writing her own novels, producing and co-hosting the story centric podcast "The Act Break" or hanging out with her spouse and two needy dogs, quoting lines from obscure, forgotten or under rated movies while taking long walks (not on the beach).

What developmental editing is… A type of editing specifically focused on the story at a macro level (the "Big Picture"). Developmental editors are focused on assessing and helping the author improve issues relating to structure, organization, plot, characters, pacing, and more.

What developmental editing is NOT… Copyediting or proofreading! Developmental editing does NOT address the grammar, punctuation, or syntax of a manuscript. A manuscript will still need these types of edits after a developmental edit.

FAQs & POLICIES

What's your editing style? My goal is to help you make your story as strong and cohesive as possible. I believe in honesty and straightforward communication, so you can get the most out of your developmental edit. I will be honest about your work, but always seek to offer constructive critique kindly, as well as suggestions for any trouble spots or issues I perceive whenever possible. I'll do my best to give direct and specific feedback that will help guide you in your revisions. I will also make notes of your strengths and things I like and enjoy about your story as a reader.

Do you offer sample critiques? Yes! But only for those who are interested in booking a full manuscript evaluation or developmental edit. I will do a 5-10 page sample edit, depending on the project’s length. This is an important opportunity for both parties to determine if my editing style is the right fit for your work before proceeding with booking.

What genres do you edit? I am familiar with a wide variety of genre fiction but most specifically science fiction, fantasy, adventure, and speculative fiction. These genres make me the most excited and tend to make up about 90% of my recreational reading, giving me a firm grasp on many of the tropes and expectations associated with them. I'm likely not the right fit for romance, historical fiction, or erotica. I'm pretty open in terms of content, but books that heavily feature rape, animal cruelty, or violence to children would be better suited with another editor. If there's something specific you're concerned about, ask and we can discuss it before proceeding.

What's your turnaround time? It depends on the nature and length of the project, but generally I aim to complete Developmental edits in 6-8 weeks: Manuscript evaluations within 4-6 weeks: Short story critiques in 2 weeks.

Pricing: Each project is different and unique. Pricing is based on multiple factors such as the level of editorial feedback agreed upon during booking, the length of the project, and the state of the manuscript. To provide an accurate quote I must complete a sample edit.

Payment Policies: Short story critiques must be paid in full up front in order to secure booking.

For manuscript evaluations and developmental edits 50% of the total amount is required upon booking and the final 50% must be paid upon completion of the service in order to receive the final product.

All payments must be through PayPal. An invoice will be sent via emaiL.

Cancellation Policy: If you must cancel, please inform me as soon as possible. Cancellation policies and stipulations are detailed in the service agreement contract that each party must sign before the start of work.

Contracts: Every project will have an accompanying service agreement. The service agreement will outline item such as, services to be preformed, items that will be provided, payment details, cancellation policies, non-disclosure agreements, and timelines for both parties. A service agreement must be signed at booking, before the start of a project.
